Capitola
South-facing sand-bottom beachbreak inside Capitola Cove, in the lee of the Monterey Bay shadow. Sheltered, slow, and rideable on small summer south swells and wrapped winter northwest energy.
Spot intel
Parking
Paid lot at the village and metered street parking on Esplanade and Monterey Avenue. Fills early on weekends. The 1 exits at Bay Avenue.
Crowd
Moderate to thick. Surf-school clusters dominate the middle of the cove. Water runs mid-50s°F — hooded full suits are standard.
Beginner-friendly?
Yes.
Sheltered sand-bottom cove with a slow, forgiving wave and an established surf-school presence. The catches are water temperature, fog, and the along-shore drift, not the wave.
Lineup etiquette
Beachbreak priority is per-wave, not by lineup position. A wave already taken from the peak isn't open to paddle into.
When it's on
South through southwest groundswell on summer days, wrapped west through northwest on winter days, with light offshore from the north through northeast.
When beginners can paddle out
Knee-high to shoulder-high on a mid or higher tide with light wind. First light runs glassy before the village crowd builds.
