Cayucos Pier
South-facing sand-bottom beachbreak alongside the Cayucos Pier in northern San Luis Obispo County. Sheltered from northwest weather by Point Estero. A slow, forgiving wave that breaks on most swells.
Spot intel
Parking
Free street parking on Ocean Front Avenue and the residential streets above. Public lot at the pier. Walk-in access to the sand.
Crowd
Moderate. The pier concentrates the lineup at the wedge alongside the pilings, the rest of the beach spreads out. Surf-school presence is steady. Water runs mid-50s°F — hooded full suits are standard.
Beginner-friendly?
Yes.
Sheltered sand-bottom beachbreak with a slow wave shape and easy paddle-out alongside the pier. The catches are water temperature and the pier pilings themselves — keep the line clear of the structure.
Lineup etiquette
Beachbreak priority is per-wave, not by lineup position. A wave already taken from the peak isn't open to paddle into. Pier pilings are a hazard — the line of travel stays clear of them.
When it's on
West through northwest groundswell with light offshore from the east through northeast. Mid-tide window.
When beginners can paddle out
Knee-high to shoulder-high on a mid or higher tide with light wind. First light runs cleanest before the village wakes up.
