Huntington Beach
West-facing beachbreak running both sides of the Huntington Beach Pier. Sand bottom shifted by the pier pilings. Combo south and west swell window — Surf City's home wave.
Spot intel
Parking
Paid lots along Pacific Coast Highway and the city beach lot at the foot of Main Street. Metered street parking on the numbered avenues running inland. Lots fill by mid-morning on any swell.
Crowd
Thick year-round and the densest stretch of beachbreak lineup in the state on a contest week. The pier funnels the lineup; sand around the pilings rearranges the peaks.
Beginner-friendly?
Depends.
Sand-bottom wave shape is approachable, but the lineup runs at competition density and the pier pilings are a hazard inside. Not a wave to learn on near the pier.
Lineup etiquette
Beachbreak priority is per-wave, not by lineup position. A wave already taken from the peak isn't open to paddle into. The pier itself is a no-paddle hazard zone.
When it's on
Combo south through southwest and west through west-northwest groundswell with light offshore wind from the northeast through east. Mid-tide window.
When beginners can paddle out
Knee-high to chest-high on a mid-tide window with light morning wind, away from the pier. Lifeguard towers on either side mark the safer paddle-out zones.
